Latin Word for STATE

by Catherine
(USA)

What is the latin word for "state"?

Dear Catherine,

Two words come to mind. First, civitas, civitatis, meaning the city-state. For example, this would be used for our 50 states. Second, populus, populi, meaning the people or the nation.

Hope this helps, and thanks for asking a Latin teacher.

Sincerely,

John
