Dear Latin Teacher,
Can you help me figure out the Latin phrase for "God Made" or "Built by God"? I thought it would be something like Deus Fecit, but that doesn't sound cool. I want something that sounds cool.
Steve
Dear Steve,
Your Latin is pretty good! Congratulations!
Deus fecit does mean God made. Other possibilities follow:
a Domino factum = made by God
Dominus fecit = God has made or God has done
To quote the Vulgate Bible:
Deus fecit duo magna luminaria
God made the sun and moon
faciamus hominem ad imaginem et similitudinem nostram
Let Us make a man in Our image and likeness
Another verb is also often used: creare
Et creavit Deus hominem ad imaginem suam
And God made man in his own image
With a twist from classical Latin (and therefore with the lower case 'd') Vergil has a famous line from his eclogues. It means a god has made these leisures for me:
deus nobis haec otia fecit
Hope this helps, and write again when you have more questions only a Latin teacher can answer.
Sincerely,
John
