Latin Translation: Essence of Light, Dark

by Anonymous

Hi, I'm currently writing a novel in which I'm using several Latin phrases. I'm a little confused about the gender of some words, and would like to check if the phrases are correct overall.

Phrase 1. Essence of Light - is this Essentia Lucis or Essentia Lux (for the title of a female)?

Phrase 2. Essence of Dark - is Essentia Tenebris the correct term (also for the title of a female)?

Your first phrase is correct. Essentia lucis means essence of light.

Your second one might read essentia tenebrarum, where tenebrarum is genitive plural meaning of darkness.

Hope this helps, and thanks for asking a Latin teacher.
