Latin Root: We Learn, We Teach

by John Gourley
(Seattle, WA)

Dear Latin Teacher,

What is the Latin translation for "we learn, we teach?"

Thanks,

John

Dear John,

We learn is discimus, we teach is docemus. A simple phrase might be discimus et docemus.

You may recognize the following English derivatives. From the Latin verb to learn (disco, discere, didici) we have disciple, discipline, and disciplinarian. From the Latin verb to teach (doceo, docere, docui, doctus) we have doctor, indoctrinate, doctrinaire, et cetera.

Click the link for more English vocabulary from the Latin root docere.

Thanks for asking a Latin teacher,

Sincerely,

John
