Latin Root: PURGARE

by Ralitsa

Hello! :) What can you tell us about the latin root 'purgare' /to cleanse/ and its derivatives.

Thank you

Dear Ralitsa,

English has purge, meaning to clean. And how about expurgate, to purge or cleanse of moral offensiveness.

If you are of certain religions, there is purgatory, where souls go to be cleansed before entering heaven.

Hope this helps, and thanks for asking a Latin teacher.

John
