Latin Root: Credere

by Jonathan G.
(London, UK)

Dear Latin teacher, how do you pronounce this word (credere) and is it the shared root of trust and believe.

Dear Jonathon,

Yes, this verb means both to trust and to believe. Follow this link for a few English derivatives from this Latin root.

As for pronunciation, the accented syllable is the first E, i.e. CRE-de-re.

Hope this helps, and thanks for asking a Latin teacher.

Sincerely,

John
