Latin Phrase: My Name Is...

by Charilyn
(Myrtle Beach, SC, Horry County)

Hello Latin Teacher,

I would like to know, how do you say..."hello, my name is..."

Thanks, Charilyn

Dear Charilyn,

Hello is either salve or salvete, depending on the number of people you are addressing.

To say 'My name is...' the best Latin phrase is mihi nomen est. It means literally 'to me the name is...'

Then simply state your name or a Latinized version of your name.

To summarize: speaking to one person, say salve, mihi nomen est.... Speaking to more than one person, say salvete, mihi nomen est....

Hope this helps, and thanks for asking a Latin teacher.

Sincerely,

John
