How to Reference a Certain Line of the Aeneid

by Rebecca

My friend wants this tattoo: “forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit" the line from the Aeneid. Can you tell me how to write the book and line numbers in roman numerals? Is there a special way to write the book and line number from this book? I remember my latin teacher writing it a certain way (MANY years ago...)

Hi, Rebecca.

Aen. I.203

The standard way of referring to classical Latin texts is to abbreviate the work (Aen. for Aeneid), then give the Roman numeral of the Book, a period, and then the line.

Hope this helps, and thanks for asking a Latin teacher.
